India Looks At Poverty And Unemployment Before The General Election

NEW DELHI, INDIA - APRIL 6: People queue for a 5 rupee (.07 cent USD) meal giveaway outside a hospital on April 6, 2019 in New Delhi, India. With a rising number of jobless youths, unemployment and poverty have been at the top of India’s political agenda before it starts a five-week-long vote on Thursday. Nationwide unemployment has risen to a 45-year high in India while half of all multidimensionality poor people are currently in the four poorest states; including the states of Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. According to reports, India needs to create 8.1 million jobs a year just to keep a steady employment rate and the country continues to discuss if it’s able to introduce a Universal Basic Income (UBI) - a regular cash payment for all or most citizens from the different states without any conditions. India's main opposition party, the Congress Party, promised a guaranteed basic income of 72,000 rupees ($1,038) a year to each of the country's poorest families every year, if voted back into power on May 23, although latest surveys predict that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will return to power despite being under steady attack for failing to deliver on job-creation pledges since being elected in 2014.
