ANTANANARIVO, MADAGASCAR: A market 16 March 2000 in the Anosibe slum area with very bad sanitation in the capital Antananarivo. In February 2000 979 people died from cholera in Madagascar, and up until mid March the figure had climbed to 1,362. The increase cannot be attributed to the recent cyclones according to health officials, but the spread is linked more to poor sanitation and lack of hygiene. People have to pay between 10 and 15 USD for vaccination against cholera. (Photo credit should read ALEXANDER JOE/AFP via Getty Images)
