A picture shows nuclear waste inside a storage room of the Garigliano Nuclear Power Plant located at the outskirts of Sessa Aurunca, 160km southern Rome, on October 17, 2017. The French Institut of Radioprotection and Nuclear Safety Institute (IRSN) and the Italian counterpart ISPRA organized today a press tour to the Garigliano Nuclear Power Plant which is being dismantled. Italy operated a total of four nuclear power plants starting in the early 1960s but decided to phase out nuclear power in a referendum that followed the 1986 Chernobyl accident. It closed its last two operating plants, Caorso and Trino Vercellese, in 1990. Plans for waste management include the development of a national repository for the disposal of low - and intermediate- level waste and interim storage of high-level waste. State-owned Societa Gestione Impianti Nucleari SpA (Sogin) was established in 1999 to take responsibility for decommissioning Italy's former nuclear power sites and locating a national waste store. / AFP PHOTO / FILIPPO MONTEFORTE (Photo credit should read FILIPPO MONTEFORTE/AFP via Getty Images)
