UNITED KINGDOM : View of the East Hall of the Science Museum, London, looking towards the Aeronautics gallery (Gallery 6). includes the original Wright Flyer, the aeroplane in which Orville Wright (1871-1948) and Wilbur Wright (1867-1912) made the world's first controlled and powered flights at Kill Devil Hills, near Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, USA, on 17 December 1903. The brothers developed a flying machine and learned to fly over several years using gliders before fitting an engine. The original Wright Flyer (shown) was placed in the Science Museum by Orville Wright in 1928, but was returned to the United States in 1948.
