White House Press Secretary Scott McClel

WASHINGTON, UNITED STATES: White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan (R) conducts an interview on the front lawn of the White House with CBS's John Roberts after doing the same with other networks discussing Newsweek's story alleging that US interrogators desecrated the Koran at Guantanamo Bay, saying, "It's puzzling that while Newsweek now acknowledges that they got the facts wrong, they refused to retract the story. I think there's a certain journalistic standard that should be met and in this instance it was not." Newsweek expressed regret that parts of a story about alleged abuse of a Koran at the Guantanamo 'war on terror' detention camp might be wrong, but said it is not retracting the story. It said a senior US government official who had originally said he saw references to desecration of a Muslim holy book in a US military report had been asked again and could no longer be sure. The report sparked anti-US demonstrations in Afghanistan and other Muslim countries which have left at least 14 dead. AFP PHOTO/Paul J.
