70 Years Since WW2, Bombs And Bodies Still Lie Scattered

SEELOW, GERMANY - APRIL 17: Workers with a munitions disposal service dig up World War II-era munitions and other equipment from a farmer's field east of Berlin on April 17, 2015 near Seelow, Germany. Munitions, some of it live and still dangerous, as well as equipment and bodies that originate from ferocious fighting between German and advancing Soviet Red Army forces in March and April of 1945 during the final stages of World War II lie scattered throughout the region often only a few feet underground. Historians claim the fighting, in battles such as at Seelow Heights (Seelower Hoehen) and Halbe, claimed the lives of up to 200,000 combatants, civilians and laborers. The German Wargraves Commission (Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgraeberfuersorge) is tasked with reburying the bodies of unearthed German soldiers, and in 2014 conducted 511 reburials. Europe, Russia and the former Allies will commemorate the 70th anniversary of World War II on May 8 and 9. (Photo by Sean Gallup/Getty Images)
