World War II veteran John Jackson, 96, a resident at Belmont Village Senior Living of Hollywood Hills, poses for photographer Thomas Sanders, not pictured. Jackson, a U.S. Army corporal, served as a military policeman stationed in Casablanca, Africa, Algiers and France. His mementos are his American Legion Post 252 cap, visitors guide to France and his discharge papers. For nearly three years, Sanders (tomsandersphoto.com) has been photographing WWII Veterans across California for a book dedicated to WWII veterans. Sanders writes, "As a 24-year-old, I realize my generation has had an easy upbringing in comparison to the WWII generation. The veterans faced the Great Depression and then the battles of WWII. Except for the soldiers fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan, my generation has not had to face any challenges similar to WWII." Sanders' grandfather was brought home from WWII after his brother was killed. Sanders says he appreciates getting to know the veterans he photographs and listening to their stories.
