An official scans San Bushman traditional leader David Kruiper's fingerprint for pension payout. Today, the San depend mostly on these monthly welfare payments for pensioners and mothers of young children. But if current attempts succeed to produce a marketable anti-obesity remedy from the San's traditional appetite suppressant, the Hoodia cactus, they stand to make substantial royalties which could counter their poverty and help their culture survive.
