Today, the San depend mostly on these monthly welfare payments for pensioners and mothers of young children. But if current attempts succeed to produce a marketable anti-obesity remedy from the San's traditional appetite suppressant, the Hoodia cactus, they stand to make substantial royalties which could counter their poverty and help their culture survive.
