DESSIE, ETHIOPIA - JANUARY 10: Construction workers ferry cement to the base of a new generator installed during reconstruction at the Dessie Referral Hospital on January 10, 2022 in Dessie, Ethiopia. The Dessie Referral Hospital was looted and vandalized by the TPLF during the time they occupied Dessie between October and December of 2021. The cost of looted supplies, equipment and damage to the hospital is reported to be over 1.76 million Ethiopian Birr ($35,530,249 USD). According to hospital administrator Dr. Haimanot Ayele, when the TPLF occupied Dessie they bought with them trained doctors and technicians who carefully removed high end medical equipment, software and other infrastructure and carted it back to Tigray. As a result some departments are barely operational or are starting from scratch with supplies coming from Addis Ababa Hospitals. The Dessie Referral Hospital offered advanced treatments for trauma and chronic conditions in addition to performing major surgeries and up to 800 deliveries a month. During peacetime the hospital served over 500,000 people a year from 5 zones and two regions including Tigray, Afar and Oromia. (Photo by J. Countess/Getty Images)
