UK - Theatre - The Making of a Pantomime Dame
David Ashley (38) and Michael Kirk (43) are the pantomime dames playing the role of the ugly sisters in a production of Cinderella at The Hackney Empire in London. This theatre has developed the reputation for putting on one of the best and most popular pantomimes in the country. "It is about putting on a bit of a uniform, a very fun and fantastic uniform, but its still a uniform. I am over 6?4?? in real life and as the ugly sister I am over 8 foot. We are ridiculous creations - you feel as if you can do anything, and we do. It is sanctioned lunacy. Pantomime is a terribly important medium because it is the first time children get to enjoy the theatre and if we do it right, they will come back and hopefully they will bring their children?s children." (David Ashley). A pantomime dame is a unique cross-dressing character who is a crucial part of any pantomime. (Photo by Gideon Mendel/Corbis via Getty Images)
