Detroit Makes Case for Federal Aid During Hearing

WASHINGTON, DC - Dec. 05: General Motors Chairman Richard Wagoner Jr.; Chrysler CEO Robert Nardelli; Ford Motor Co. CEO Alan Mulally; and Ron Gettelfinger, president of the International Union, United Automobile, Aerospace and Agricultural Implement Workers of America; during the House Financial Services hearing on potential financial aid legislation for the U.S. auto industry. President Bush called on Congress Friday to act next week on his proposal to provide short-term aid to the U.S. auto industry by redirecting an existing loan program to that purpose. He seemed to brush off Democratic calls for the Treasury Department to provide funds from its financial bailout program. ÄúIt is important that Congress act next week on this plan, and it is important that taxpayer money be paid back if any is given to the companies,Äù the president said as Big Three automakers spent a second straight day on Capitol Hill pleading for emergency aid.
