Audience chamber in the Shoguns palace, Edo, Japan, 1690s.
JAPAN - APRIL 01: Engraving of the audience chamber (Senshoshiki) in the Shogun's palace, Edo (now known as Tokyo). The presents brought by the Dutch tributary mission are seen to the left of the room. The margins contain musical instruments. The Shogun would sit at point A and the Dutch prostrate themselves at point D. From 'The History of Japan' (1727) by Engelbert Kaempfer (1651-1716). Kaempfer was a German physician working at the Dutch trading post in Japan from 1690-1692. On his return to Europe he wrote 'The History of Japan', which records many aspects of Japan in the Genroku period (1688- 1704). (Photo by SSPL/Getty Images)
