Sterling Hayden Testifying

(Original Caption) Film actor Sterling Hayden, a Marine hero during World War II, testifies before the House Un-American activities committee, April 10, 1951, in Washington, D.C. Hayden, former husband of screen actress Madeleine Carroll, admitted joining the communist party in Hollywood in June, 1946. He said he quit 6 months later when he found that the party was totalitarian and aimed at the overthrow of the U.S. Government. Hayden summed up his brief membership in the Red organization as "the stupidest, most ignorant thing I've ever done."
