Abdullah heads the National Conference, Kashmir's main political party which is currently in opposition, and served as a federal cabinet minister in India's last Hindu nationalist government. He supports Indian rule over part of the Himalayan region and is the grandson of Sheikh Abdullah, who was Indian Kashmir's first chief minister after partition in 1947 and pushed for autonomy for the region.
