Henri Chretien Looking Through CinemaScope

Inventor Henri Chretien, a French physicist, looks through his 1920s creation, the CinemaScope camera. CinemaScope was the first film making process to photograph a motion picture through a special lens onto a 35mm filmstrip, and then project it back onto a wide screen without distortion. It became popular in the 1950s when theaters used the expansive movies to draw audiences away from the booming television market. (Photo by Paul Almasy/Corbis/VCG via Getty Images)
