Portrait of Jimmy Wilde

(Original Caption) Jimmy Wilde, 62, still winces as he speaks of the fists of Pancho Villa that took him from the flyweight championship of the world in June, 1923, and ended one of the greatest of all boxing careers. They wept in his corner and begged him to let them throw in the towel. "Push me towards him," he answered. "The champion goes down fighting." Wilde, pictured in 1919 during his reign as flyweight champion, had 864 professional bouts in 15 years. He lost only four and avenged two of the defeats in return matches. Jimmy became a fighter at sixteen when discovered his amazing punch. In all boxing history there have been only a small handful of one punch knockout artists. He was one of them though his arms were as thin as broom handles.
