Hindu Pilgrims Take Part In Amarnath Yatra

BALTAL, KASHMIR, INDIA - JUNE 28: Kashmiri nomads rest in their hutments along the Amarnath rout during the annual Amarnath Hindu pilgrimage to the sacred Amarnath Caves, one of the most revered of Hindu shrines, on June 28, 2018 in Baltal, 125 km (77 miles) east of Srinagar the summer capital of Indian administered Kashmir, India. Amarnath Hindu pilgrimage was halted for hours after inclement weather along the north and south Kashmir on Thursday and was resumed in the afternoon flowing improvement in the weather. Pilgrims were allowed to move towards the Cave Shrine from north Kashmir's Baltal base camp although the pilgrimage continued to remain suspended from Pahalgam base camp in the south. The Amarnath Hindu pilgrimage officially started early today on Thursday. The 60-day long Amarnath Yatra will end on August 26, coinciding with the Shravan Purnima festival. Hindu devotees, braving sub-zero temperatures, began the hike over glaciers and along paths overhanging gorges to reach the sacred Amarnath cave housing an ice stalagmite, a stylized phallus worshiped by Hindus as a symbol of the god Shiva, surrounded by the Himalayan mountains. More than 200,000 Hindu pilgrims are expected to take part in this year's two-month pilgrimage, during which Indian paramilitary soldiers and police are being deployed along the route to protect against attacks by militants who have been fighting for the independence of Kashmir since 1989. Experts and locals say rising temperatures and the activities of the pilgrims, such as burning wood and using diesel generators have put a strain on the ecosystem of the area.
