A Libyan official addresses a rally mark

A Libyan official addresses a rally marking the 50th anniversary of the Syrian-Egyptian union in the Libyan capital Tripoli on February 22, 2008. Late Syrian President Shukri al-Quwatli (portrait-R) and Egypt's Gamal Abdel Nasser (L) created the United Arab Republic (UAR) on February 6, 1958. But the union only lasted for three years as it was abrogated by the Syrian side following a military coup in September 1961 by factions opposed to the unity.
