(Original Caption) New Device a Boon to Deaf--New York..... Rosemary Kennedy, a specially trained instructor of the new "Visible Speech" device to aid deaf persons, points to the syllable picture chart during a demonstration at the Bell Telephone Laboratories today. The new device which translates sounds into patterns of light projected on a screen is expected to herald a new era for the deaf. Each vowel sound in the chart has its individual speech pattern, modified by the consonant which introduced the sound.
