CHIANG MAI, THAILAND - 2023/02/05: Opium poppy buds and flowers are seen in the Doi Pui Hill Tribe Museum in Hmong Doi Pui Village. Doi Pui Hill Tribe Museum has an opium poppy garden at the back of the museum, which is hard to find. The opium poppy plant is a plant that produces opium, a powerful narcotic. Due to its dangerous nature, the Thai government has banned cultivating this plant since 1958. However, the museum got authorization to have it in their garden to display their history as it was the means of living by highlanders in Thailand when it got introduced by Chinese migrants in 1940. After it was banned, Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej The Great, in 1969, introduced cultivating local peaches and other crops, making the locals earn as much as they earn from the opium poppy plant.
