Salt pan worker's daughter Aarti transports plastic cans filled with water on an old bicycle in the Khadaghoda Sector in the Little Rann of Kutch, some 160 kms from Ahmedabad on February 7, 2010. In India's salt-producing heartland, thousands of families including children as young as 10 toil in the desert using a harvesting technique that is unchanged in centuries. In Little Rann of Kutch, a barren brownish desert and local centre of in-land salt production, an estimated 200,000 people work barefoot in extreme hardship, exposed to a relentless sun and a host of occupational dangers.
