San Bushmen's Hoodia Remedy for Obesity
San grandmother, Ouma Una (left) and Ouma Kais, chew on Hoodia cactus which the Bushmen have traditionally used to eliminate hunger and thirst while on long hunts, as well as for aphrodisiac and blood purification purposes. If current plans for Phytopharm UK succeed to develop Hoodia as an anti-obesity remedy, the San people will get royalties from their intellectual property. This money could help them save their dying culture and reduce their impoverishment. (Photo by Louise Gubb/Corbis via Getty Images)
