San Bushmen's Hoodia Remedy for Obesity

A scientist at the CSIR laboratories in Pretoria (Council for Scientific and Industrial Research) works with an extract of the Hoodia plant, P57, that CSIR has patented and is working to develop with Phytopharm UK, as an anti-obesity product. The Hoodia plant has been used traditionally by San bushmen in Southern Africa as a substitute for food and water. San bushmen and the CSIR have agreed on a profit-sharing formula whereby the San will be compensated for their ancient knowledge of the plant if it passes clinical trials and goes into commercial production.
