King Carl and Queen Silvia at Jubilee Banquet
(Original Caption) Social Obligations. New York: Sweden's King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia attend the jubilee banquet marking the 75th anniversary of the Swedish-American Chamber of Commerce in New York. Meeting and greeting people and thus helping put their country's best foot forward is a big part of their job. Asked if being King today was not unlike being a rarefied kind of public relations person, the King said, "Yes, it is like being a new kind of leader very much involved with the media. In Sweden we have adapted to the fact that we live in a social democracy and that monarchs have no political influence." The King is 35, and the Queen is 37 and they have two children.
