Treating Blindness Around the World

RIVERSIDE, LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA, USA, 18 FEBRUARY 2016: Terry Byland watches a movie with blind friends in Riverside, California. He is watching the movie with the aid of a narrator device and the Argus 2 Retinal Prosthetic, which is implanted in his left eye. Terry is able to make out lines, shapes and forms on screen and says that for him the device has helped to make this an immersive experience. Terry Byland, 67, is the only person in the world who has had both the Argus Retinal Prosthesis systems installed in both of his eyes. Terry lost his sight to Retinitis Pigmentosa, a disease that attacks the photoreceptor cells in the retina. This left Terry blind by age 45. 11 years later he underwent the first operation, implanting the first version of the Argus device inside his eye. From 2004 to 2010 Terry was part of the study for the development of that device. (Photo by Brent Stirton/Getty Images Reportage)
