Its water is salty in the East and salty in the west. It is freshwater in Ritu County and saltwater at the junction of Ritu County and Ladak County in the west. About four-fifths of the length and area are in Ali Ritu County, Tibet, while the remaining one-fifth is in Ladakh, India-controlled China. The lake is 4240 meters above sea level, 57 meters deep, and the basin area is 28714 square kilometers. There is the highest bird island in the world.
