This image shows: 2 Annual Rings, Springwood (larger xylem cells or vessel elements), Summerwood (smaller xylem cells), Xylem (conducts water and minerals mostly from the roots to upper parts of the plant), Phloem (conducts dissolved nutrients like carbohydrates manufactured by photosynthesis to the stem, roots and other parts of the plant ). Also shown is secondary phloem (solid purple cells to the right of the cambium in this image. Between the xylem and secondary phloem is the Vascular Cambium made up of very actively dividing cells (by mitosis) producing secondary xylem and phloem. The long horizontlly arranged Rays conduct materials laterally.
