Looking towards Lowestoft on the Suffolk east coast from Pakefield Ness. Taken at low tide during a week of big tides, and during a run of mixed weather conditions of intermittent sunshine and thunder storms. The cliffs are reasonably stable in summertime, but prone to erosion when higher tides storm them. These cliffs are part of the Cromer-forestbed formation, a fossiliferous layer that shows evidence from when this area was a forested flood plain with animals like hippo, deer, extinct elephants. It is also the site of findings that show some of the earliest evidence of human activity in the UK. On the horizon in the sea to the right, just about visible, are two tower-platform constructions recently installed to encourage black-legged Kittiwake nesting. (Currently they have taken to nesting on homes and businesses in the town.)
