The Sassenpoort was constructed in the 14th century, specifically between 1406 and 1409, and served as one of the main entrances to the fortified city of Zwolle. It was built as part of the city's defensive walls and was primarily used to control access into the city, as well as to protect its inhabitants from potential threats. The gate's name, "Sassenpoort," translates to "Saxon Gate" in English, which refers to the merchants from the Saxon region who would pass through this entrance into the city. The Sassenpoort was strategically positioned at a crucial location along the city's defensive walls, connecting the city center with the region to the east. Architecturally, the Sassenpoort is an impressive example of Gothic brickwork. It features a rectangular shape with a height of approximately 38 meters (124 feet) and a width of around 20 meters (66 feet). The gate is adorned with decorative elements, including spires, battlements, and turrets, which give it a distinctive and imposing appearance.
