Photos of Dr. Dave Hnida tending to injured soldiers. Dr. Dave Hnida joins Natalie Morales live in Studio 1A. Dr. Hnida, good morning, good to have you here. Dr. DAVE HNIDA: Good morning. Thanks for having me. MORALES: So life was good in Littleton, Colorado, where you had your own practice, great family life, but yet you decided at the age of 48 that it was time to serve your country. Why? Dr. HNIDA: I decided at 48 that it was time to help our country. We're in the war, they needed doctors. So the simple answer is, I went over to help kids. Longer answer, though, has to do with the fact of a little bit of self-discovery there. MORALES: Mm-hmm. Dr. HNIDA: I grew up in a family where my dad had been in World War II and was a lieutenant at Anzio and sent a lot of young men off to their deaths, and he wound up turning to alcohol as his psychologist when he came back from the war. And so I went through my life growing up, trying to figure out what would make a man live that way. What would--what kind of experiences did he go through? MORALES: Mm-hmm. Dr. HNIDA: So that was one reason for me to join the military. Also had--being from Littleton, Colorado, close ties to the Columbine High School community. MORALES: Mm-hmm. Dr. HNIDA: Nine of the 13 who died at Columbine were patients of mine at some point in practice. MORALES: Wow. Dr. HNIDA: And then I also had a situation with my daughter, Katie, who was sexually assaulted. And so when you throw all of those things into a mix, you say to yourself, OK, do I--do I become bitter and go into a shell, or do I get better by going out and serving others? And I chose the service route. MORALES: And how do you think your--I mean, you've been on tour--two tours through Iraq now. Dr. HNIDA: Right. MORALES: And "Paradise General," the furthest thing from Paradise. You describe it as sort of a MASH unit. Describe sort of the everyday, what it is. I mean, you never know what that day is going to bring, right? Dr. HNIDA: Well, if you've ever seen "M*A*S*H," it is a picture postcard. MORALES: Mm-hmm. Dr. HNIDA: It is tense, it is hot, it is sand all over the place. And, you know, like with Radar O'Reilly, who could sense those helicopters coming in, you didn't hear them. You felt them coming in. MORALES: Mm-hmm. Dr. HNIDA: And you never knew what was going to come through the door, and you had to take care of anything that came through the door. MORALES: And there's a situation that you mention in the book where you actually had to--you cared for the wounded Americans, but also the insurgent who tried to blow them up. I imagine at times like that, I mean, that's when--that really puts your Hippocratic Oath to test. Dr. HNIDA: We called it the tug-of-war, and often it was a battle between the oath to Uncle Sam as well as the Hippocratic Oath. MORALES: Mm-hmm. Dr. HNIDA: The Hippocratic Oath won all the time because we were doctors. We were reservists, we were volunteers from the civilian world. And it was a situation where the worst went first, and if the insurgent was wounded worse than the American soldiers, the insurgent went worse***(as spoken)***. It doesn't mean that we didn't take good care of the American soldiers, but you just did what you needed to do. And we reconciled with that and just did what we were supposed to do. MORALES: Mm-hmm. Dr. HNIDA: It's funny because I think we have a little different concept of life as Americans. MORALES: Mm-hmm. Dr. HNIDA: American soldiers, if we would run out of blood in the operating room, we would make a call out and soldiers would line up to donate. And they never knew if they were donating blood to an American or to an insurgent. MORALES: Hm. Interesting. Dr. HNIDA: And it was just amazing to think about what the American soldiers and the American thought process is. MORALES: Now that you're--I mean, you're a reservist, and you could be called up next year. Are you willing to get back out there and serve again? Dr. HNIDA: It is always tough to think about going back to war because war is just so hard and so unnatural and so devastating, but you do what you need to do. If there is a call... MORALES: Mm-hmm. Dr. HNIDA: ...where the young need your help, you answer that call because that's what you are supposed to do. Life is not a spectator sport. MORALES: Mm-hmm. Dr. HNIDA: We are here to serve. MORALES: Well, your patients, your family and, of course, our military men and women who have the privilege of being with you and serving with you, they are very proud of you. Thank you so much for being here. Dr. HNIDA: Thank you. MORALES: "Paradise General: Riding the Surge at Combat Hospital in Iraq," by the way, is the name of the book. Dr. Dave Hnida, great to have you here, a real pleasure. Dr. HNIDA: Thank you. 09:50:27 (3:49) Today's Kitchen: Last-Minute Grilling: Food Network's Sunny Anderson Prepares Grilled Pork Chops with Sweet and Sour Glaze GFX: Header "Grilled Pork Chops with Sweet and Sour Glaze."
