Bad news continued last month for General Motors and Chrysler. Both of those lost ground compared to a year ago." GFX Indicating December 2009 sales for General Motors and Chrysler were down while Toyota's and Ford's were up. INT NEW YORK WILLIAMS: But the news was a lot better for Toyota, up 32 percent. And the big story in the US today is Ford, with sales up 33 percent from the same time a year ago. CNBC's Phil LeBeau joins us from a Ford dealership tonight just outside Chicago. And, Phil, first of all, the adage in Detroit has always been, if you build good cars people will buy them. By most accounts, Ford is building better cars. But can you put a number alongside the percentage of buyers who may also be trying to reward the company for not taking government bailout money and trying to make it on its own?" INT LAGRANGE, ILLINOIS In x-talk from Ford showroom, CNBC's Phil LeBeau says "That's hard to say, Brian. One thing is clear. Ford's reputation improved by the company not taking a bailout and not having to go into bankruptcy. And as a result, people started changing their attitude about Ford, giving the company another chance, willing to come into showrooms and to look at the product lineup. And as you mentioned, it all comes down to products selling. Once people came into the showroom, they noticed that there's a lineup of new vehicles that are well-designed, well-made, and that's the reason that sales have improved. So it all starts with the change in attitude with the buyer, and clearly that goes back, in part, to them not being bailed out by the federal government." WILLIAMS: May not be all sunny skies ahead, but at least good news for one of the US automakers today. Phil LeBeau covers the car business for CNBC and for us. Phil, thanks.
