BAE Systems job losses: political and unon reactons; ENGLAND: Yorkshire: Brough: EXT David Davis MP (Conservative) speaking to press SOT - Grim news - 900 jobs going - End of production at Brough - We both made the argument this is beginning of 90 day consultation period - We wnat to see the numbers and will challenge decision as hard as we can Alan Johnson MP (Labour) speaking to press SOT - this is end of manufacturing at Brough - this is the home of the Hawk - Has a long history - none of that seems to have figured in calculations BAe have made - Union guys as devastated as we are - (need) to examine every as[ect of this decision - - this is big manufacturing company, to cease manufacturing.. - One thing to down size but to cease manufacturing.. - they've got productive plant with wonderful skills that may be needed in the future - Don't want to give false optimisim but we will use statutory 90 days - They have to open the books and listen to counter-proposals to keep manufacturing at Brough - Important for region and constituents but also for UK manufacturing David Davis SOT - This is an oustanding workforce - This is the 3rd time we've been through reductions here - Workforce have been brilliant - they are low cost operation, efficient - They are worth fighting for - Alan is right, it will be difficult to deliver but they have to pay attention and provide information - contract data, cost data and production data
