MS: People seated on the ground together. Rolling shot of a group of people. Spiritual leader of the Tibetan people, the Dalai Lama joins Ann Curry live in Studio 1A. ANN CURRY: Your Holiness, good morning. DALAI LAMA: Good morning. CURRY: Mm-hmm. You have spent your entire life bringing this message of compassion, of tolerance, of forgiveness... DALAI LAMA: Hm. CURRY: ...and contentment to people all over the world. But today people all over the world, including here in America, are experiencing so many difficulties: a bad economy, war, disaster, the oil spill. So many things are plaguing the spirits of people. How can we find contentment in this world at this time with so many difficulties? DALAI LAMA: Hm. Basically, these problems are temporary. CURRY: These problems are temporary. DALAI LAMA: Uh-huh. We human being basically more, what's it, a gentle nature. CURRY: We have a gentle nature. DALAI LAMA: Uh-huh. And also, we have the, what's it, the creativity nature there. So these problems--of course, some problems, major disaster... CURRY: Mm-hmm. DALAI LAMA: ...that is something little different. But many other problem which essentially man-made problem. CURRY: Hm. DALAI LAMA: Our own creation. So logically, we also have the ability to overcome these problems. CURRY: Of course we want to overcome these problems, yes. DALAI LAMA: Uh-huh. I think general atmosphere on this planet, I think last two centuries or one century, we are not acting with true human spirit. We--I think sometimes we too much sort of stress on the superficial level and then--and short-sightedness. Due to that, a lot of problems we see happen. Now what we learned? We must think holistically, broadly and long-term. I think this is--this is just the beginning of 21st century. I think compare 21 century and 20th century even with...(unintelligible)...century, early part of new century, later part of new century, much change. These change not come from sky but come through humans--human experience. And we're becoming more realistic. So now 21st century, I think there is every reason this 21 century will be much happier, much peaceful, much compassionate century than the 20th century. CURRY: Mm-hmm. DALAI LAMA: This I'm quite sure. But you see, everything different on our own sort of action. The positive action--in order to carry positive action, we must develop here a positive vision and sincere motivation, and our conduct should be often, what's it, honest, truthful, transparent. Then I think many problems can reduce. This my feeling. CURRY: You're saying that if we are honest and truthful and find it within ourselves to have generous lives, you're saying that the problems that we're having in the world today don't have to--won't be here and this will end, the suffering won't be as difficult. DALAI LAMA: Oh, can reduce. CURRY: Can reduce. DALAI LAMA: Can reduce. That's certain. Many man-made problem, if we develop certain kind of right attitude and...(unintelligible)...method, many of these, our own sort of created problem, it certainly eliminate. And if not, reduce. CURRY: Reduce. DALAI LAMA: That's--that is certain. CURRY: But you said just now that that is not always true for when there is a natural disaster. And you yourself have been tested. DALAI LAMA: Hm. CURRY: You know, there was just this last April... DALAI LAMA: Mm-hmm. CURRY: ...a terrible earthquake... DALAI LAMA: Yes. Yes. CURRY: ...in Tibet, in the place where you were born, and you could not return. Thousands were killed. You could not return to help people. So how do you handle the sadness in you when you cannot do what you want to do? DALAI LAMA: Oh. I always--whenever I saw some problem, some tragedy, I always remember one advice from one ancient Indian Buddhist master. A tragedy happened, then think, analyze the situation. If there is a way to overcome that, then no need worry. If there is any way--no way to overcome that suffering, that tragedy, then no use to worry. CURRY: So you're saying... DALAI LAMA: But however, I think not like 20th century, not like the tsunami problem and also the serious earthquake in... CURRY: Hm. Haiti. DALAI LAMA: ...Haiti and Chile and now the last--two years ago in the Sichuan area, and now this year was in the...(unintelligible)...area, response from the rest of the world is immense. I think in--through the centuries or early part of the world, early part of the time, I don't think the suffering--just people carried the suffering, no one take care. Now it is completely different situation. These are positive sign, however. CURRY: So are you saying that humankind--right. So you're saying humankind is becoming more compassionate. DALAI LAMA: Yes. Certainly. CURRY: So the state of humankind today, are we getting worse or are we getting better as a people? What would you say? Is... DALAI LAMA: Better. No question. Some mischievous--handful mischievous people always there. I think last several thousand years it's been that, and for future also. You see, some handful mischievous people always there. But problem, you see the news or media--I think it interesting you're also the media. You see, usually you see they sort of highlight these negative things. CURRY: Difficulties. DALAI LAMA: These positive thing is usually we take for granted. So not news, so not come. That my feeling. CURRY: Your Holiness--Your Holiness, you have been a major factor. And if world and the humankind is getting better, a lot is owed to you. Thank you so much for being here this morning and for joining us. And I know that you'll be leading three days of teachings at Radio City Music Hall to spread--continue to spread your message. Thank you so much... DALAI LAMA: Thank you. CURRY: ...for joining us... DALAI LAMA: Thank you. CURRY: ...this morning. Thank you so much. DALAI LAMA: Thank you. 08:30:44 The Dalai Lama Presented Matt Lauer and Meredith Vieira With White Scarves EJ 08:30:57 (:08) INT TODAY NEW YORK STUDIO MS: Spiritual leader of the Tibetan people, the Dalai Lama presents Matt Lauer with a scarf and wraps it around his neck. Sarah Jessica Parker joins Meredith Vieira live in Studio 1A. MEREDITH VIEIRA: Good morning to you. Ms. SARAH JESSICA PARKER: Good morning, MV. VIEIRA: Do you call yourself that? Oh. Ms. PARKER: No, I don't. VIEIRA: Yeah. Ms. PARKER: Well, no, you know, that's not entirely true. I sign correspondence SJ. But I think it's more about being ashamed of the length of the name, it's not that I'm assuming anyone will recognize SJ, it just takes up so much space and time. VIEIRA: Well, whatever you call yourself, everybody knows you. I remember sitting here with you two years ago almost to the day. Ms. PARKER: Up there, my friend. VIEIRA: Up there, Top of the Rock, that's right. Ms. PARKER: One of the great moments of my life, with that sweeping panorama of our beloved city. VIEIRA: And you're looking at it again. And your movie, the first "Sex and the City" was about to come out and there was a lot of buzz, but who knew it would be such a blockbuster, $415 million in ticket sales worldwide. That is a tough act to follow. Ms. PARKER: Yes, it is. VIEIRA: As a producer, were you nervous at all? Any second thoughts about doing the sequel? Ms. PARKER: Yeah. I mean, we have enormous apprehension. VIEIRA: Yeah. Ms. PARKER: This--the conversation alone is riddled with complexity because I think we are so indebted and grateful for the audience's participation in the series to begin with and then the fact that they left their homes and did it with such enthusiasm and sometimes two and three times that it was a really--it's a conversation for the entitled. And so we thought very carefully about what is the story that we feel was deserving of asking them to leave their homes again. And everything that a woman or a man or a young girl, what goes into that evening, you know, the parking, the babysitters, the popcorn. VIEIRA: A lot. That's right. Ms. PARKER: A lot. And those are hard-earned dollars and we better be worth it because they have been incredibly hospitable for 13 years. VIEIRA: So let's talk about the movie. You pick up where you left off two years ago... Ms. PARKER: Yeah. VIEIRA: ...Carrie and Mr. Big are--they're happily married, but you're having a little trouble dealing with that title, Mrs. John Preston... Ms. PARKER: Yeah. VIEIRA: ...wife. Ms. PARKER: I mean... VIEIRA: What's the problem? Ms. PARKER: Well, I think Carrie enjoys complication. I think Carrie, because of the work she has chosen, which is asking questions, sexual politics and interpersonal relationships, and she is now pondering what this idea of tradition means to her. And it's simultaneous to the--to the imminent publication of her fourth book, her first book about being married, the first book she's never written about, she's not written about being single. And I think she is trying to redefine tradition for herself. And she's curious about why she ran toward something so willfully and is yet there finding herself, trying to reshape it. And where better to ask these questions than the Middle East? VIEIRA: Exactly. On a--on a camel, no less. Ms. PARKER: But that is an interesting place to talk about tradition. VIEIRA: Well, you know, we've all seen the trailer, and it's in the Middle East where Carrie catches up with her past in the form of her old flame, Aidan. Look at the smile on your face. Let's take a look and then we'll talk about it. (Clip from "Sex and the City 2") VIEIRA: Yeah. And I don't want to give anything away, but it gets very messy for Carrie. Why was it important to bring Aidan back, beside the fact that John Corbett is so darn adorable? Ms. PARKER: This is a situation where a lady is actually having her cake and eating it, too. That--it's me and Carrie. I think it was important to bring Aidan back because he is the archetypal person in the past that sort of defines Carrie Bradshaw. She was loved, she was pursued in the way that she always wanted to be and she complicated it, she left him, she ran from him, she was running after the future, she is now in her present married life content, hopelessly in love with a man she's married to, and yet she is keeping--she keeps reconsidering her past. And who best illustrates that--who better than Aidan? VIEIRA: Than Aidan. Ms. PARKER: And what a yeoman's job, honestly, to come after eight years of an absence and to, you know, hope and pray that he lived up and he exceeded all her hopes and expectations. He is a spectacular actor. VIEIRA: Yeah, he sure is. Ms. PARKER: Yeah. VIEIRA: Now you shot that in Morocco. You guys spent, I guess it was eight weeks overseas, most of that time in Morocco. Ms. PARKER: Yeah. Yes. All in Morocco. VIEIRA: And you could have ended up wanting to kill each other, the tabloids would have loved that. Ms. PARKER: They would have. VIEIRA: But instead, you really did bond, didn't you? Ms. PARKER: No, it was--I feel a little teary when I talk about this because I think it was--despite the hardship of being away from my children, it was the best professional experience of my life, and I think in large part because I was surrounded and with Kim and Kristin and Cynthia. And we had this rare unique opportunity to live together, which New York doesn't provide, we have homes here. And we came to know each other and love each other and need each other in a way that New York had never allowed before. And I just couldn't feel more grateful for having had this particular experience. VIEIRA: Well, I got a chance to see the movie, it is so much fun. Ms. PARKER: Yay. VIEIRA: You did a good one, Sarah Jess--J. Ms. PARKER: Yay. Well, pass on the compliments to everybody who's... VIEIRA: I will. They're all coming by. Ms. PARKER: Oh, good. VIEIRA: Sarah Jessica Parker, thank you so much. Ms. PARKER: Thanks, Meredith. VIEIRA: Tomorrow, actually, Kristin Davis, aka Charlotte. Ms. PARKER: Yeah. VIEIRA: And a few guys from the cast will be... Ms. PARKER: KD. KD. VIEIRA: KD. KD will be here. Ms. PARKER: KD. KD, KC, CN. VIEIRA: KD, KC, CN. Ms. PARKER: There's two CNs. Cynthia Nixon and Chris Noth. VIEIRA: Yes. Oh, OK. There you go. Ms. PARKER: Kim Cattrall. VIEIRA: I can't--I can't keep up with all these... Ms. PARKER: No, I'll send you an e-mail. VIEIRA: All right.
