Hernán Cortés has his ships sunk (1519), woodcut, published 1888 - stock illustration
Fearing that his men might return to Cuba instead of going to the Aztec Empire, Hernán Cortés caused his ships to sink (1519). So they had no choice but to accompany him on this trip. This decision had serious consequences since Cortés was trapped in Mexico. Wood engraving after a copper engraving by Karel Donatus van Beecq (Dutch painter, ca. 1638 - 1722), published in 1888.
