Children with Turkey Pulled Wagon
Nortonville, KS. Youngsters stand beside a child-size wagon pulled by turkeys in this photo made when Kansas was a frontier. Children were particularly valued in the frontier family, isolated as it was from distant relatives and past friends. With developing strength, they brought helping hands to the family's labor. This is one of a series of pictures, courtesy of the Kansas State Historical Society, from "Pioneer Woman: Voices From the Kansas Frontier" (Simon and Schuster) by Joanna L. Stratton. It represents her completion of a book begun three generations ago by her great-grandmother, Lilla Day Moore. | Location: Nortonville, Kansas, USA.
