RION, GREECE: Picture taken 25 February 2004 of the Rion-Antirion cable-stayed bridge under construction, crossing the 3 kilometers Corinth Gulf strait. The Rion-Antirion Bridge is the product of a seven-years construction project and will result in the world's longest cable-stayed bridge. With a suspended deck of 2,252m, the bridge features four pylons (where there are usually two) and has a reference span of 560 meters. Located in the western end of the Gulf of Corinth, the Rion-Antirion Bridge will link the Peloponnese (southern Greece) to the Greek mainland. The Bridge is also unites two major roads: the intersection of the Patras-Athens-Thessaloniki motorway and the western axis of the Kalamata-Patras-Igoumenitsa road. Because of the high seismic activity of the area, the Bridge requires sea bed reinforcement via 200 hollow steel pipe (for each pier) driven into the sea bed and topped with gravel.
