Nazi Art the U.S. Military Gathered After Defeating Hitler

FORT BELVOIR, VA - FEBRUARY 7: Sarah G. Forgey, curator of the Army Art Collection, and Dr. Charles H. Cureton, director of Army museums, pull out Wilhelm Sauter's "Soldiers on the West Front," a 1941 oil painting on masonite that is being housed at the Army Art Collection US Army Center of Military History Museum Support Center on Friday, February 7, 2014, in Fort Belvoir, VA. The piece was taken by US soldiers during WWII from Haus der Deutschen Kunst. As a new movie, "The Monuments Men," celebrates the GIs who recovered precious European art that was stolen by the Nazis, American soldiers were also gathering another kind of art: that produced by the Nazis. In the wake of the war, allied forces embarked on the "de-nazification" of Germany. That meant collecting reams of Nazi propaganda art. Much of that material, including watercolors by Adolf Hitler, now resides at the Army's Museum Support Center at Fort Belvoir. (Photo by Jahi Chikwendiu/The Washington Post via Getty Images)
