Carnation Revolution Day Is Celebrated
LISBON, PORTUGAL - APRIL 25: Socialist Party members chant while marching during the people's parade through Avenida da Liberdade, where thousands marched celebrating the 51st anniversary of the Carnation Revolution (Revolução dos Cravos) on April 25, 2025 in Lisbon, Portugal. This year, Carnation Revolution Day marks the 51st anniversary of the revolution known as "Revolução dos Cravos" that ended Portugal's dictatorship in 1974. A military coup led by the Armed Forces Movement (MFA) and code-named "Operation Historic Turn," overthrew the Estado Novo government, which had been in power since 1933. During the revolution, citizens offered carnations to soldiers to celebrate their victory. The soldiers placed the flowers in their guns and on their uniforms, which became a symbol of the revolution. (Photo by Horacio Villalobos#Corbis/Getty Images)
