Taronga Zoo Veterinarian, Gary Reddacliff, is playing foster-mum to a baby echidna. The young echidna was brought to the Zoo seventeen days ago after having been dug up by a bulldozer during land-clearing operations at Nowra.Gary Reddacliff believes the baby is about four months old and is tube-feeding his little charge once a day on a special artificial formula made by the Department of Animal Nutrition at Sydney University.Considering its shaky start in life,"Pup" is doing very well. Zoo staff are delighted with its progress and weight gain and hope that "Pup" will survive to be the first echidna lives in the Zoo hospital but if the Zoo's efforts are successful, "Pup's" future will be secure in the proposed new Monotreme House planned at Taronga.
