The camp ceased functioning following the revolt by its Sonderkommandos on 19 October 1943. The memorial stones represent the 1700 towns and villages in Europe where the murdered Jews originated from: Poland, Austria, Belgium, Czechoslovakia, France, Greece, Yugoslavia, Germany and the Soviet Union. In the photo some names can be seen inscribed on the stones. The stones surround the pits where the bodies were burnt in an attempt to conceal any record of the terrible deeds that were carried out in this place.
