Manhattan bridge Spans East river In New York City - stock photo
Manhattan bridge in New York City opened on December 31, 1909. It was designed by Leon Moisseiff, and is important due to its innovative design. As the first suspension bridge to employ the deflection theory for the stiffening of its deck, it is considered to be the forerunner of many long-span modern suspension bridges. The bridge is very ornate, spans 1,470 ft (448 m), has a total length of 6,855 ft (2,089 m), connects Canal Street with Downtown Brooklyn at the Flatbush Avenue Extension, and in 2009, was designated as a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark. This photograph was taken in 2014.
