General Election 2010: Conservative press conference; David Cameron introduces Sir Michael CaineSir Michael Caine (Actor) press conference SOT- When they first mentioned this to me all I heard was National Service - I thought 'Oh my God, they're bringing it back'/ I did it myself and it wasn't very good/ We do need something in place of it/ You may think what the hell is he doing here?/ I'm a representative of all those youngsters who have been forgotten in this country/ I come from Elephant and Castle, a deprived area/ I was back there a year ago making a movie/ They asked me how did I get out?/ I had a loving family, father and education/ Didn't have drugs or guns/ You have now, a very hard core of people who we have got to save/ Here you have a complete government actually interested in saving young people and giving them a chance in society/ young people say to me "I belong to a gang, but not because I wanted to beat someone up but because I didn't want someone to beat me up"- Every single guy I talked to, people who would scare the daylights out of you, said they didn't get a chance/ he probably did get a chance and missed it/ We should give them a second chance/ I'm here because I've seen a government (sic) that is interested / Not just a green or white paper, it's already started and proving a success/ I always back a winner, especially if it has already won/ I'm here to represent young people who were deprived or ignored/ If you do that, they will fight you/ This government is doing a wonderful thing with the National Citizens Service(Applause)
