Members of the Passe Livre Movement demand free public transport
Hundreds of student demonstrators are taking to the streets of Sao Paulo to protest against an increase in metro train fares. Footage is showing demonstrators marching with flags and banners, surrounded by a heavy police presence. The protesters are walking from the Sao Paulo Municipal Theatre, down the streets of the city center. This follows a decree by regional governor Tarcisio De Freitas, which reportedly raised the ticket prices on metro trains in Sao Paulo from 4.40 Brazilian reals to R$5 (roughly 0.93 euros) on January 1.
