40 People Push Stranded Whale In Shizuoka Back Into Sea To No Avail
Video footage taken in Shizuoka shows firemen, coast guard members and local residents trying to push a beached whale back into the ocean on Sept. 18. The approximately six-meter-long whale died after five hours of rescue efforts by about 40 people. Hiroshi Ohizumi, a professor at Tokai University’s School of Marine Science and Technology, said the cetacean appeared to be a female adult of the Cuvier’s beaked whale variety. He said a male of the same species was found dead a day earlier at a nearby beach and that the whales were apparently pushed close to the coast by strong winds.
