The Tub Boat Fishermen Of Sado Island
SADO, JAPAN - OCTOBER 19: 70-year-old Yoichi Sakuma spears a horned turban shell as he fishes in his tub boat on October 19, 2020, on Sado Island, Japan. First used around the middle of the 1800s, the tub boat (or Tarai-bune) was traditionally made from cedar wrapped with bamboo on the outside and is mainly found on Sado Island where its durable design makes it easier for fishermen to manoeuvre around the narrow coves and craggy coastline as they search for octopus, horned turban shell and abalone. Although the catch once provided a steady and respectable income, in recent years prices have dwindled to the point where the majority of fishermen are now retirees looking to top up their pensions.
